‘Suicide Squad’ continues its box office run with an estimated $33 million at the international box office on Friday, bringing the three-day overseas total to $64.6 million.
The film was released in an addition 17 markets including the U.K., Mexico and Spain, raising the total numbers to 17,900 screens in 57 markets.
In the U.K., ‘Suicide Squad’ opened to about $6.2 million on 1,233 screens, making it the biggest opening Friday ever in August. Excluding previews, the totals beat ‘Deadpool’ by 88% and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ by 223%. Mexico opened to an estimated $3.9 million on 2,976 screens, commanding a 76% market share among the top five titles. Spain’s debut brought in $1.4 million on 569 screens.
In Russia, the film earned $2.6 million garnering a 90% market share among the top five films, bringing the cumulative total to $6.4 million. Up against the Olympics opening ceremony in Rio, Brazil pulled in an additional $2.0 million for a total $5.1 million. Australia’s additional $2.3 million on 516 screens raises its total to $4.8 million. Korea’s three-day total is $6.4 million thanks to Friday’s additional $1.8 million on 822 screens.
David Ayer directed ‘Suicide Squad’ from his own script about a secret government agency that recruits imprisoned supervillains to save the world. The film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne.
