A unique event, designed to inspire people of all ages and genders into taking up the sport of boxing and hosted by the Bahrain Boxing Federation (BBF) yesterday, proved to be a roaring success.
Featuring children, both boys and girls, women and amateur male fighters, the event called ‘Domestic Boxing’ drew a large crowd of spectators who flocked to the venue, the Isa bin Rashid Sports Halls in Isa Town, and cheered on the participants who competed in the various bouts.
The various categories featured fights between schoolboys, juniors, women and amateur pugilists with the duration of the event extending to almost seven hours.
“We are extremely happy that people showed so much interest in our initiative,” BBF president, Omar Salman Al Slaise told the GDN. “We weren’t sure how many people would register to participate, but the response has been overwhelming. So many people also showed up to support the participants.”
Al Slaise added that the BBF planned to hold more such events in future.
“The fact that so many people participated and so many more came to watch is an indication of how much the people of Bahrain like boxing,” he explained. “More events like this one will enable the BBF to scout new talent and groom champion boxers for the future.”
