Manama: An attempt is being made to rediscover Mrinal, the protagonist of Rabindra Nath Tagore's 'Streer Patra' written a century ago.
Mrinal is a woman who is a rebel and in dismay of the inhuman behaviour of people surrounding her. In a letter that she writes to her husband, she declares herself free from the company of such people including her husband and finds herself merging with nature.
It seeks to change the way women are being seen in the recent times vis-à-vis historical context.
‘Her Letters’ is a gathering of the thoughts about a free being and keeping in mind the topic of women.
It focuses on the free being of the woman.
Tagore’s concern like in many of his other short stories is the question of dependence and its relationship to fear, the inability to set the mind free within or even without colonial power.
He questions the assumption of a woman being dependent on a man and his responsibility as it were. And he declares that we only live in delusion!
Tagore’s thoughts were precious for the chaotic times and they are precious even today.
The 65-minute play is directed by Sharmistha Saha and features Virginia Woolf's suicide note, Amrita Pritam's poetry, Lata Singh, Sukeerti Sharma and Bharti Perwani.
The premier of ‘Her Letters’ is on Friday, Nov. 4, at 6pm and 8pm, at Teflas, Versova, Mumbai.
