Riyadh: A Saudi Shura Council member called on the authorities to allow women to join the army on an “optional” basis.
Dr. Sami Zaidan said in his proposal that the work of women in the army would be restricted to nursing, catering and other administrative tasks, leaving the combat roles to men.
He defended his proposal by saying that Muslim women at the time of the Prophet used to be allowed to go the battle field during wars to do nursing jobs or prepare food for soldiers.
