BAHRAIN’S Al Hidd fell to a 1-0 defeat against Syrian side Al Wahda in the first round of the group stage of 2017 AFC Cup at National Stadium in Riffa.
The only goal of the game came through Al Wahda captain Osama Omari after Al Hidd defenders failed to clear the ball well from their penalty box.
Al Hidd’s Obaidli failed to control the ball which went directly to Omari, whose shot was then deflected by Obaidli.
The loss sees Al Hidd sit at the bottom of Group ‘B’ with no points. Al Wahda are on top with three points from their win. Al Quwa Al Jaweya from Iraq and Lebanese side Safa sit in second and third places respectively with one point each after they tied their opening game 1-1.
Al Hidd will now have to prepare well for the second round of the group stages where they face Al Quwa Al Jaweya on March 6 in Doha.
Al Hidd, currently coached by Bahraini Mohammed Al Shamlan, had claimed their first ever league title last season.
Bahrain is being represented in the AFC Cup by Al Hidd as well as Muharraq, who play their first game of the group stages today against Omani Side Saham in Muscat at 6pm.
Both teams are potted in Group ‘C’ alongside Jordan’s Al Wedhat and Nejmeh from Lebanon.
