Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea in adults include, snoring, frequent waking in the night, learning disabilities, excessive sleepiness during the day, depression, morning headaches, teeth grinding, heartburn and GERD.
Children who suffer from sleep apnea may experience ADHD or ADD, bedwetting, teeth grinding or a restless sleep.
The risks associated with sleep apnea being left untreated for adults and developing children are cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and obesity.
Deadly car accidents can also be the result of undiagnosed or untreated sleep apnea, as seen in recent news reports of a train driver suffering from the issue.
It is important to be evaluated by a trained professional if you do not wake feeling refreshed and rested, you often experience morning headaches, your or your sleep partner identify that you choke, gasp or stop breathing during sleep or you fall asleep while driving a vehicle and while having conversations.
Watch and listen to your child - they should be evaluated if they meet a certain criteria. This criteria includes; if they wake in the same position they fell asleep, the bed sheets are strewn all over the bed, the child has trouble concentrating or becomes agitated, if they have dark circles under the eye or if they snore.
The American Association of Paediatrics “Patient Parameters” states all children should be screened for snoring and all children who snore should have a sleep study for evaluation of apnea because of ADD, ADHD and cardiovascular risk.
