Two young Emiratis were arrested for stunt driving, endangering people's lives and damaging property using a stolen car, according to Al Bayan newspaper.
Al-Ain Public Prosecution charged the duo with stealing the car, squandering public money, threatening other people's lives, driving without a licence, using a car without number plates and creating a ruckus.
Police arrested them following complaints and a video which went viral.
The defendants, who will stand trial, stole a parked car, removed its number plates and fitted the vehicle with a special exhaust pipe to create a racket.
The duo then headed to a petrol station where they refueled the stolen vehicle and then fled without paying the bill.
They then headed to the airport roundabout where they engaged in stunt driving and damaged 200 sq m of grass and a 100 water sprinklers – all valued at Dhs11,000.
Police investigation revealed that the duo, who were identified and caught, later abandoned the car in the desert as it got stuck in sand
Under UAE laws, suspects convicted of perpetrating such acts face up to three years in prison, in addition to paying for the damages.
