UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler, Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, honoured Maggie McDonnell, winner of the Global Teacher Prize, according to WAM.

The prize is organised annually by Varkey Foundation in Dubai.

McDonnell - winner of the $1 million prize for 2017 - lives and works in Salluit, an Inuit village deep in the Canadian Arctic. In one of the world’s most remote regions, surrounded by snow and ice, she has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of her students and everyone in Salluit.

The ceremony, held at Atlantis, The Palm Hotel, was attended by Dubai Crown Prince Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, senior ruling family members and officials, along with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Varkey Foundation chairman Sunny Varkey.
