UAE summon Swiss envoy over Bahrain human rights allegations

The UAE has summoned Swiss Ambassador Maya Tissafi over criticism levelled against Bahrain, state news agency WAM reported.

A Swiss statement against Bahrain at the Human Rights Council in Geneva was denounced by the UAE Foreign Affairs Ministry, which said such issues should be resolved through bilateral channels between Bahrain and Switzerland.

The ministry also accused Switzerland of ignoring Bahrain's efforts to improve its human rights record and described Bahrain’s security and stability as integral to that of the UAE.

It comes after Switzerland's Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Valentin Zellweger, last week made allegations of 'repression of civil society' in Bahrain.
