MUHARRAQ defeated Al Ahli 83-79 in their first clash of the Golden Square of the Bahrain Basketball League at the Khalifa Sports City Hall in Isa Town.
The two-game semi-final match will see the sides clash again on Saturday. However, should Al Ahli win, they will force Muharraq into a deciding match on March 30.
The game was stopped for more than 30 minutes with just three minutes to play in the third quarter and the score was tied at 55-all after Al Ahli’s Omran Abdulredha stomped on Muharraq’s Ahmed Hassan’s head.
The incident saw team staff and players all clash on the field before the UAE’s refereeing staff consisting of Hassan Hajji and Salem Al Zoaby had to watch a television replay for the first time in the sport’s history in Bahrain to take the appropriate action.
The quarter scores were 23-18 (Muharraq), 20-17 (Muharraq) 29-22 (Al Ahli) and 18-15 (Muharraq).
Muharraq started the match with a line-up consisting of Ahmed Hassan, Bader Abdulla, Sayed Hashim Habib, Mohammed Hassan and Kadeem Colbey.
Al Ahli fielded Hussain Shaker, Kadhem Majed, Subah Hussain, Hesham Sarhan and Malcolm White.
Abdulla topped the scoring charts for Muharraq with 21 points, followed by Hassan with 15 and Ali Abbas with 14.
Al Ahli’s Shaker scored 22 points for his side, with Malcolm White adding 18 and Kadhem Majed tied with Hesham Sarhan with 10 each.
White hauled down 15 rebounds, a big margin ahead of Muharraq’s Ali Shukralla who only had eight and teammate Abdulla with six.
