THE world’s greatest obstacle race – Spartan Race – will be held in Bahrain for a second time on April 14 under the patronage of the Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, chairman of Supreme Council of Youth and Sports and president of Bahrain Olympic Committee Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
This was announced yesterday at a press conference held at Bahrain Weightlifting Federation (BWF) in Um Al Hassam.
Media Office and Information Centre of Shaikh Nasser, Tawfiq Al Salehi, vice-president of BWF Sultan Al Ghanem, CEO of Dubai Spartan Races Rayan Agha and organiser of Spartan Races Michael Colhera attended yesterday’s press conference.
The race, named ‘Bahrain Sprint and Super’ will be held at the Endurance City. More than 7,000 visitors are expected to attend the event.
“Last year’s race had almost 3,000 participants and a total of 5,000 guests at the venue. This year we already have 2,000 registered participants and are expecting the number to exceed 5,000 participants and around 7,000 visitors,” Agha said.
The organisers will also be using the entire Endurance City, unlike last year where they only had half of it.
There are three different races with the Kid’s Race over 1.5km starting at 10am.
Sprint
The Sprint Category sees participants running between 5-7km facing 20 to 23 obstacles.
The Elite Sprint kicks off at 10.30am and Open Sprint at 10.45am.
Entry fee for the Elite Race is currently $100 and might increase to $130 depending on availability. The Open Sprint entry fee is from $74 to $88.
The Super Category consists of 13 to 15kms with 24-29 obstacles.
Entry fee for the Elite Super, starting at 8am, is $125 and can go up.
Entry fee for Open Super, starting at 8.15am, is $84 and can increase to $98.
There is no dress code for the race but participants are expected to keep in mind that they will be running in water and mud and have to climb hills and mountains as well as crawl under barbed wires and jump over fire.
Elite Spartans recommend participants to have performance gear that is not cotton as well as water packs, compression underwear, cliff bars and energy gel.
Spectators are welcome to view and support.
They will have access to the rocking Festival Area with “up close and personal” viewing of some of the biggest obstacles on the course as well as the Finish Line.
Tickets cost BD2 for adults and can be purchased at the Endurance City while children under-12 enter free.
There will also be music, hands-on obstacle challenges, local food/beverage vendors and sponsor giveaways.
