The Bahrain KHK MMA team will begin their journey today in the European Open Championships of Amateur MMA in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Organised by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, the event will be held at Efe Hotel Marinela until April 2.
The championship fights were launched officially yesterday with 151 male and female fighters from 27 countries competing in different categories from featherweight to heavyweight. The female fighters will compete from the featherweight to lightweight fights.
The first day of the championship will witness nine championships in various categories, with attendance from members of the Bahraini delegation headed by the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Association (BMMAA) president, Colonel Khalid Abdulaziz Al-Khayat.
The championship draw presented Bahraini fighter Hussain Ayyad with a new opportunity to accomplish a new achievement in this edition, after qualifying for the round of eight where he will face Irish fighter David Fogarty.
Ayyad gave the Kingdom of Bahrain a bronze medal during his first participation in the championship held in Brimingham two years ago.
The draw granted a rest for fighters Nayef Fikey, Maher Hamed and Hamad Mattar on the first day, and they will begin their journey today, with Nayef Fikey facing Russian fighter Ziiad Sadaily in the 70kg category, Hamad Mattar facing Swedish fighter Hoger Salih 66kg category and Maher Hamed facing Finnish fighter Eemil Kurhela in the 66kg.
