Maidservants and domestic helpers in Saudi Arabia will now be able to have their own bank accounts, according to Al Riyadh newspaper.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Development launched the project in a bid to ensure these labourers get their wages regularly and authenticate their contracts
Official spokesman Khalid Abal Khail said the aim is to protect the rights of domestic helpers and employers, improve domestic work environment and enhance job security.
“The first phase of the scheme will cover domestic workers in Saudi Arabia,” he said in a statement issued today.
Under the move, employers are required to authenticate the work contracts on official online portal www.musaned.gov.sa and declare the monthly salary.
The employers will then have to open bank accounts for their domestic workers in due course.
Abal Khail called on the public to report problems or violations involving domestic workers through official channels, including website www.musaned.gov.sa or through customer service hotline 19911.
