Pune, India: Ben Stokes smashed a scintillating unbeaten century last night to steer Rising Pune Supergiants to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League.

Needing 25 runs of 12 balls, Stokes struck two sixes in the penultimate over which yielded 17 runs to bring the target down to eight of six balls.

Stokes (103, 63 balls, 7 fours, 6 sixes) then stuck the first ball of the last over to complete his century while Daniel Christian slammed a six of the penultimate delivery to complete an unlikely victory.

Earlier, Gujarat Lions made a modest 161 all out in 19.5 overs with opener Brendon McCullum (45, 27 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) the top scorer.

With this victory Pune jumped to fourth spot in the standings with 12 points from 10 matches, while Gujarat stay sixth (6 from 10).

Earlier in Mumbai, the hosts beat struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets to move to the top of the table (16 from 10).

Pawan Negi’s all-round show for Bangalore failed to break their losing streak.
