Teams in charge of monitoring the environment warned that pollution “has reached a high level which requires urgent measures”.
Authorities are attempting to reassure the public, claiming that “the situation is under control” and that “the sea of Kuwait is safe from industrial and chemical pollutants”.
The General Authority for the Environment announced that it would release results of labs tests used to investigate the cause of dead fish washing up on the coast.
Diving team chief Walid Al-Fadhel estimated the quantities of dead fish which were washed up ashore at 50 tons at least.
“The dead fish spread over five kilometers to affect the beaches of Al Salam, Al-Showeikh, Al Doha, Ashiraj, Umm Al-Namli Island”, he told Alqabas newspaper.
Meanwhile, the ministry of health denied issued a statement warning people against eating seafood due to alleged “polluted fish that caused cancer”.
According to a report issued by the Ministry of Works, garages, factories, shops, car cleaning and greasing facilities are dumping their waste in rainwater drainage network. A number of cases have been referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation
