Dubai: Mohammed Majid Malik, a 28-year-old Brit drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Dubai.
Malik, from Luton, England was holidaying with his wife, Maria Shahid, and the incident occurred on the last day of their honeymoon trip.
According to Gulf News, husband and wife got into the hotel pool. The wife stayed on the shallow side of the pool while husband moved towards the deeper end.
His wife said in a statement that the duo were enjoying their time in the pool, they were chatting and taking photos.
While she got out to keep her phone in her bag, her husband kept moving towards the deep end of the pool. When she turned around, she saw that her husband was drowning.
She immediately raised an alarm and cried for help and two hotel guests dived and pulled him out.
A spokesperson for Jebel Ali Beach Hotel made a statement to a newspaper that said, “The unfortunate incident occurred when the guest and his wife entered a swimming pool at approximately 1.15am (August 15). The guest quickly got into difficulties having ventured into the deep end of the pool while his wife remained in the shallow end.
“We were alerted of the situation by his wife calling for help and two members of the resort team rushed to the guest’s aid removing him from the pool and immediately commencing CPR activities. This was then continued by the nurse who arrived on the scene minutes later. Upon arrival, the ambulance crew then took over CPR but sadly it was announced that the guest had died on his arrival at the hospital,” the statement said.
“We have extended our full support and co-operation to all the authorities involved and the case has been closed. We will also remain at the bereaved family’s disposal.”
Media reports said Malik, a mortgage adviser of Pakistani origin, got married on July 30 in London.
