Saudi preacher jailed for defaming popular comedian

GDN Online Desk

A Saudi preacher was sentenced to 45 days in prison for defaming popular comedian Nasser Al Qasabi, whose daily Ramadan serial “Selfie” on MBC TV proved to be a big hit across the Arab world.

According to Sabq newspaper, the Court of Appeal upheld the initial verdict which was issued by a lower court in the Ouhud Rafida governorate against Said bin Farwa.

The preacher was also ordered to sign a legal undertaking to stop smearing the reputation of the actor who is tackling relevant issues in his Ramadan serials.

Bin Farwa had mounted a vitriolic attack on the comedian, describing him as being “an infidel with no dignity”.

Al Qasabi later rejected all attempts for reconciliation, refusing to withdraw the libel suit he had lodged against the preacher.
