BATELCO Gunners United beat Al Fakhar 2-1 in the final of the Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Football Championship which was part of the Third Ramadan Sports Championship - Nasser 10 - at Shaikh Khalifa Sports City Stadium.
Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, chairman of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and president of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BCO), deputised Hesham bin Mohammed Al Jodar, Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, to crown the winners in the presence of BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, president of Bahrain Football Association (BFA) Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa and members of the High Organising Committee headed by Tawfiq Al Salehi.
Penalty
Al Fakhar’s Mahdi Humaidan missed a penalty in the 35th minute but his teammate Mustafa Yaqoub made it up after two minutes by putting his team ahead.
However, Brazilian Diego did not allow Al Fakhar to enjoy the lead for more than three minutes as he equalised in the 40th minute.
The match was decided in the dying minutes when Omar Al Malky scored the match-winner with a fine long-distance shot.
Al Jowder thanked Shaikh Nasser for his continuous support to the youth and sports movement in the Kingdom and for his constant backing of the Bahraini youth to reach the highest levels in sports and represent the Kingdom in a dignified manner in various sports events.
Batelco Gunners United captain Shaikh Khalid bin Salman Al Khalifa dedicated winning the title of Nasser 10 to honourary president of the team Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa and the team sponsors Batelco.
“Our most important aim was to reach the final, and then came the bigger goal which was to win. This was the third time for us to reach the final and winning it for the first time was great. We lost the previous two in penalty shootouts, and we didn’t want to be on the losing side again,” said Shaikh Khalid.
Brazilian Diego was the top scorer of the tournament with seven goals. He was the winner of this award last year scoring 10 goals.
The final also witnessed five cars being raffled and the winners were Ema Chrom, Mohammed Al Dosari, Khalid Abdulaziz. Atta Mohammed Radwan and Mohammed Jameel.
