Johannesburg: Taddy Etekiama, once banned for using two names and a fake passport, scored twice Tuesday to throw V Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo a CAF Champions League lifeline.
His goals gave the Kinshasa outfit a 2-1 home victory over previously unbeaten Saint George of Ethiopia at Stade des Martyrs in a Group C clash they had to take maximum points from.
The Congolese remain bottom of the table with only three points from four matches, but victories in their remaining two fixtures could secure a quarter-finals place.
Former champions Esperance of Tunisia top the table with seven points, Saint George have five and title-holders Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa four.
Etekiama scored twice within 28 minutes of the kick-off in the DR Congo capital, first through a sizzling close-range shot and then from a penalty kick.
Champions League leading scorer Saladin Said halved the deficit on 66 minutes via a lob to raise his CAF goal tally this season to seven.
Kinshasa-born Etekiama, 30, played for Rwanda in 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying as Daddy Birori using a fake passport and false birth date, and scored a hat-trick against Libya.
He was later suspended for two years by African football body CAF and Rwanda were disqualified from the competition.
