Omani health authorities called upon patients planning to travel abroad for treatment to ensure that the medical institutions they are dealing with are authorised to conduct organ transplants.
"The healthcare institution must be officially authorised to perform such operations within the laws, regulations and procedures in force in those countries," said the Ministry of Health.
It urged patients to seek the necessary information about hospitals and regulations by contacting Omani diplomatic missions abroad.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has ranked Oman among the top six importers of organs in the world.
Oman imports organs mainly from Pakistan, Iran and India for patients on waiting lists, said a report in the Times of Oman, which cited figures dating back to 2003.
According to medical sources, Omanis travel abroad due to shortage of donors and buy kidneys for OMR20,000 on average.
