Catching a whale nap is a rare sight. Now, imagine watching a group of whales resting in the depths of a sea.
Pro underwater photographer Franco Banfi, accompanied by diver Sabrina Belloni, was the lucky one to witness this up close while following a pack of sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea, near Dominica Island.
They suddenly stopped moving and went into a synchronized vertical rest. A behaviour that was first documented only back in 2008.
Further studies revealed that this collective nap occurs for approximately 7 percent of the whale’s life, in short intervals of just 6-24 minutes.
