The Saudi Northern Border University has reportedly hired a Lebanese teacher who is suspected of being involved in a corruption case dating back to 2008 in her country, according to Okaz newspaper.
Northern Border region ruler Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud directed the university to conduct an investigation into the claims.
Social media websites had launched a campaign urging the authorities to investigate the appointment of Dr Mona Walid Baalabaki at the Saudi university.
Education Minister Dr Ahmed Al Esa has also set up a probe committee to investigate the allegations and submit a report within a week.
Dr Baalabaki reportedly replaced safe medication, when she was in charge of Rafik Hariri Hospital, with expired ones which caused the death of a number of patients.
According to allegations posted online, Dr Baalabaki managed to sell the original cancer medication and kept the money for herself. The Lebanese authorities had then launched an inquiry into the case.
Meanwhile, Rafik Hariri Hospital issued a statement confirming that former head of the pharmaceutical department Dr Baalabaki had effectively been fired over financial and administrative violations.
The Lebanese government-run public hospital also revealed that Dr Baalabaki had been suspended from work since 2009 after the High Disciplinary Authority investigated the case and decided to sack her.
