BAHRAIN’S Sadik Mikhou narrowly missed out on a podium finish last night in the men’s 1,500 metres final on the concluding day of action in the 2017 IAAF World Championships.
Mikhou put in a valiant effort pacing himself on the back-end of the lead group for much of the race. But at the bell, the contenders began to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and Mikhou could not match their finishing sprints.
Mikhou still managed a solid position of sixth overall among the 12 finalists. He finished with a time of three minutes 35.81 seconds.
Elijah Manangoi and Timothy Cheruiyot enjoyed a Kenyan one-two. Manangoi claimed the gold medal in 3:33.61 while Cheruiyot was the silver-medallist in 3:33.99.
Filip Ingebrigtsen of Norway came away with the bronze medal in 3:34.53.
Ahead
Also finishing ahead of Mikhou were Adel Mechaal (3:34.71) of Spain and Jakub Holusa (3:34.89) of the Czech Republic were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Kalkidan Gezahegne finished 14th overall in the women’s 5,000m final.
Kalkidan tried valiantly to set the pace for the field and she was in the lead at the first 1,000m mark. But by 2,000m, she had dropped significantly to 10th, and by 3,000m was already at the very back in 14th.
Kalkidan completed her race in 15:28.21. Hellen Obiri of Kenya clinched the gold in 14:34.86. Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia won the silver medal in 14:40.35, while Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands was the bronze-medallist in 14:42.73.
Bahrain ended this year’s World championships with an impressive haul of two medals, including one gold and one silver medal.
The gold was won by Rose Chelimo in the women’s marathon while the silver was clinched by Salwa Eid Naser in the women’s 400m.
