The Kuwaiti authorities could soon impose fees on citizens and expatriates for using the roads network nationwide, especially on new projects.
Assistant Undersecretary of Roads Department at the Public Works Ministry Ahmad Al Hassan unveiled the plan which, he said, aims at upgrading the road infrastructure.
In an interview with Al Rai newspaper, he said that alternative roads free of charge would be provided for drivers who preferred not to pay levies.
“The aim is not to levy fees but to organise the traffic and upgrade the road network,” he pointed out.
The Minister of Works Abdulrahman Al Mutawa submitted a report to the Cabinet, proposing levies on users of Shaikh Jaber and Doha causeways.
MP Safa Al Hashim was at the forefront of those calling for fees to be imposed on expatriates only, claiming the measure would address the dysfunctional demographic balance.
