AN Australian film, Tanna, comes to the screen tonight at the Bahrain Cinema Club from 7pm.
Set on the island of Tanna in the South Pacific, the 2015 film depicts the true story of a couple who decided to marry for love, rather than obey their parents’ wishes.
The young girl from the indigenous Yakel tribe runs away with the man she loves to avoid an arranged marriage.
Meanwhile, villagers wrestle with preserving their traditional culture or adapting it to the increasing outside demands for individual freedom.
Directed by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean, Tanna was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
It won the Audience Award in the International Critics Week sidebar and the Best Cinematography prize at Venice International Film Festival.
