KOLKATA: Three-time champions Brazil fought back from a goal down to edge Germany 2-1 and barge into the semi-final of the Fifa Under-17 World Cup 2017 yesterday.
Seeking their fourth title overall and first since 2003, Brazil had to strike twice in a space of six minutes in a second-half blitz to clinch the hard-earned win and arrange a meeting with England in the first semi-finals in Guwahati on October 25.
Second half substitute Weverson and Paulinho scored in the 71st and 77th minutes respectively after Germany captain Jann-Fiete Arp had given his side the lead in the 21st minute by converting from the spot.
European champions Spain also reached the semi-finals after downing Iran 3-1 in their own quarter-final clash held in Kochi.
Spain, seeking their maiden title, now meet African champions Mali in Navi Mumbai in the second semi-finals on Wednesday.
This will be Spain’s sixth appearance in the semi-finals in nine attempts.
