The US Navy has provided aid to an Iranian fishing boat after a reported piracy attack off Yemen.

Iran's Coastguard called the US naval command in Bahrain to report Tuesday's incident and to ask for help following the attack south of Yemen's Socotra island, the navy said in a statement.

NAVCENT co-ordinated with the European Union Naval Force, which sent a patrol aircraft to investigate the incident.

The US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) and the Turkish-led Combined Task Force 151 (CTF 151) attached Japan Maritime Self Defense Force destroyer JS Amagiri (DD-154) responded to the vessel's location.

The Howard's boarding team provided food and water, made repairs, and gave medical aid to three injured civilian mariners.
