Comedian’s jail term cut in defamation trial

A BAHRAINI actor and comedian accused of defamation has had his jail sentence slashed.

Mansour Al Jedawi, aged 45, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in absentia for defaming a former MP.

He was convicted by the Lower Criminal Court in April based on social media posts referring to Mohammed Khalid, who served as an MP between 2002 and 2010.

They appeared on Facebook and Instagram in 2014 and the ex-MP, who claimed he had been labelled a “sorcerer”, said he was made aware of the comments by relatives and friends.

Mr Al Jedawi lodged an objection to the verdict because he was sentenced in absentia and the same court yesterday reduced his original sentence to four months behind bars.
