TWO men accused of smuggling more than BD100,000 worth of marijuana into Bahrain hidden inside a painting have been acquitted.
The Bangladeshi men were taken into custody after police found the narcotics inside a DHL package which arrived on a flight from Bangladesh via the UAE in June, according to court documents.
Three kilogrammes of the drug were found hidden inside the painting after a police dog alerted authorities to the presence of drugs in the package.
The defendants were arrested when they agreed to pick up the package from police officers posing as DHL employees.
The High Criminal Court yesterday found both not guilty of smuggling drugs with the intention to sell.
The main defendant, aged 33, denied any knowledge of the drugs and said a friend in Bangladesh had sent him the package which he was told contained some clothes he was to deliver to another man.
