MANAMA and Nuwaidrat were both victorious last night in the 10th week of action in the Zain Bahrain Basketball League.

Manama cruised past Bahrain Club 80-52 while Nuwaidrat defeated Al Ettihad 68-60 despite the superb effort of Ettihad guard Hassan Helal, who registered a rare triple-double in yesterday’s other game.

Both contests were played at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Manama had a sloppy start and were facing a stunning 36-40 at the break. But it was a game of two contrasting halves, and Manama clamped down defensively and held Bahrain Club to just 12 points the entire second half – six in apiece in the final two quarters.

American import Wayne Chism had 21 points and eight rebounds to help lead Manama. Maytham Jameel added 20 and nine rebounds while Younes Kuwayed chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Merrill Holden, also from the US, scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Bahrain Club. Khalid Ali had 12 and Jalal Akbar finished with 10 points in the losing effort.

With the result, Manama claimed their eighth win in as many games and moved to a tie in first place with Al Ahli and Nuwaidrat with 16 points apiece. Bahrain Club dropped their seventh game and have four points from their two wins.

Nuwaidrat, meanwhile, finished strong against Ettihad as they turned a 28-34 deficit at the half to a slim 48-46 lead heading into the fourth, after which they did just enough in the final canto to claim the eight-point victory.

Seven-foot, one-inch Serbian professional Mile Ilic was dominant once again, scoring 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds while blocking four shots for Nuwaidrat.

Mohammed Buti chipped in with 18 markers as the team’s only other player in double figures.

Jawad Abdulla and Hussain Hasan finished with nine points each.

Helal’s all-around effort saw him finish with 19 points, including four three-pointers, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while also registering five steals. American professional Antwan Wilkerson chipped in with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Nuwaidrat improved to an 8-2 win-loss record and 16 points as they share first place atop the league standings. Ettihad suffered their fifth defeat to go with five wins. They ar eon 10 points and are just outside the top four.
