Kuwaiti security authorities dealt with 3,500 electronic crimes over the past ten months, newspaper reported.
Cases of defamation and abuses topped all other types of cybercrimes, a source from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation told Al Qabas newspaper.
The Cybercrime Directorate has also blocked dozens of offensive websites since January, in co-operation with competent national and international authorities.
The source said that international cybercrime networks operating overseas blackmailed them into paying large sums of money, after threatening to post compromising photos on social media websites.
According to the source cited by Al Qabas, hackers managed to infiltrate the accounts of certain companies, urging maximum security measures when engaging in online business transactions.
Social media users were also warned against exchanging their personal data, photo or files of family pictures and other sensitive documents.
WhatsApp was the most used in electronic crimes, followed by Twitter and Instagram.
