MANAMA: A new digital mobile wallet that not only enables contactless payments but also allows person-to-person money transfers and cash-back loyalty rewards has been launched by Batelco and Arab Financial Services (AFS).
The solution called bWallet was unveiled by Batelco Bahrain chief executive Mohamed Bubashait and AFS chief executive B Chandrasekhar at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay yesterday in the presence of VIPs, guests, board members and management of both companies.
The mobile wallet will use dynamic quick response (QR) technology and will have NFC functionality, allowing customers to tap and pay at participating outlets.
All mobile users, regardless of operator, can use the application, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.
The registration is a fully online paperless process.
More than 40 leading brands, with 300 retail outlets, have already signed up to make the service available for their customers with many more set to be onboard soon.
Batelco chairman Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said the new service, in partnership with AFS, is in line with Batelco’s commitment to ensure the best in class digital and fintech solutions for the kingdom’s consumers and is
another step in the journey towards meeting Vision 2030.
According to Mr Bubashait, the new service was a merger of its core business of mobile communications with payment solutions powered by financial technology in response to evolving customer needs.
AFS chairman Sael Al Waary said the launch of bWallet represented an important milestone in the firm’s strategy and was a core component of its vision of “becoming the partner of choice in facilitating payments and fintech in the region”.
Mr Chandrasekhar said as a special introductory offer, the first 10,000 customers of bWallet will receive BD3 sign-on bonus.
In addition, 2pc cashback will be offered on all merchant payments made through the bWallet until March 31.
