IN a first-of-its-kind operation in the country, an elderly Bahraini suffering from several health disorders successfully underwent spinal surgery under local anaesthesia.
The man, who is 80 years old, was suffering from severe back pain extending to his left leg, rendering him unable to move or walk.
The patient was faced with the threat of chest infections or clots in the lower limbs.
Administering general anaesthesia would have put the man at greater risk, said Dr Yousif Sharaf, an orthopaedic surgeon at the University Medical Centre of King Abdullah Medical City, who carried out the surgery.
The operation took half an hour during which a small incision measuring five centimetres was made in the patient’s back to remove the spinal disc herniation putting pressure on his nerves.
The patient began walking in under 24 hours after the surgery was complete.
