A US national has finally been allowed to return to Bahrain where he works after being stranded at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport for three days.

Satyendra Singh said he arrived in Delhi from Lucknow on Saturday and was in transit to Bahrain.

However, his handbag containing his passport was mistakenly taken away by a passenger to Canada. The Air Canada flight carrying Mr Singh’s bag arrived at Delhi airport yesterday evening.

“He was provided food and accommodation at the Air India lounge and we helped him get his passport back,” said an Air India official.

Speaking about his ordeal, Mr Singh said he had reached Delhi and went for security check to board the international flight.

“The queue was long so I put my handbag in the scanner. By the time I finished the checks, I could not find my bag.

“Security who checked the CCTV footage found that another passenger took the bag and boarded the Air Canada flight which had already departed by then.”

The Canada-bound passenger had reportedly left his own bag behind.

Mr Singh was left with no money or clothes. He spent the night on the floor of the terminal as he could not leave due to security reasons.

His immigration had been cleared in Lucknow, so he could not even go back.

“I informed my family and they said they would send some money so that I could buy food. But there was no way they could have contacted me. Finally, on Sunday, Air India moved me to the lounge,” said Mr Singh. He was visiting India to meet his parents, who live in Lucknow.
