RIFFA Club maintained their recent winning ways after stunning perennial title-contenders Al Ahli 76-68 last night in their week 21 match-up in the Zain Bahrain Basketball League.
It was the fourth win in a row for Riffa who we are peaking at the right time with the league’s preliminary stages coming to a close and the knockouts looming.
Meanwhile, also yesterday, Al Ettihad edged past Bahrain Club 76-71 in the day’s other contest held at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
In Riffa’s victory, the boys in white and blue had to battle back from a 26-34 deficit at the half. A strong fourth quarter saw them outscore their rivals 32-18 as they closed the game out with a flurry to secure the win.
American professional Marcel Jones was a one-man wrecking crew for Riffa. He had 28 points, 20 rebounds and eight steals. Point guard Ahmed Ali Hussain contributed 20 off the bench. He made five three-pointers in the game.
Hussain Shaker paced Ahli in the losing effort with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. US import Ryan Wright added 14 points and 21 rebounds while two other Ahli players scored in double figures, but it did little to help in the game.
In the other game of the night, Ettihad bounced back from up to 24 points down.
American Antwan Wilkerson had 32 points and 14 rebounds to lead the winners. His countryman Merill Holden had 20 points and 21 boards in the loss.
League action continues tonight with Al Hala taking on Al Hidd and Sitra facing Isa Town.
