Teams target King Cup final berth

Thu, 08 Feb 2018

The second-leg matches of the 41st King Cup semi finals will be held tonight.

Al Najma face Ettihad at 6.10pm and Muharraq take on Riffa at 8.40pm at Bahrain National Stadium in Isa Town.

The winners of both semifinalists will qualify to the final match of the most precious football competition in the country, with the final match is set to be held on February 17th. Time and venue to be decided later.

Both matches are expected to be exciting affairs after the first-leg matches had ended in draws. Al Najma and Ettihad played a goalless draw while Muharraq and Riffa drew 1-1.

Al Najma have won the King Cup title five times – three times under their old name Al Wehda and twice under their current name – and will be looking to qualify for the final and get closer to their sixth title.

Ettihad, on the other hand, will be looking to make a history tonight by entering their first ever final of the competition. The team has never reached the final of any major football competition.

The second match is expected to be a clash between two heavyweights. Matches between Muharraq and Riffa are considered as the country’s derby attracting large numbers of supporters.

Last year’s runners-up Muharraq have won the King Cup title the most number of times – 32 – and the fans are eager to regain the cup they lost to Manama (2-1) last year.

Riffa have also set sights on the title, having won it five times already, the last being in 2010.
