PEOPLE across Bahrain donned their athletic gear for activities marking Bahrain Sports Day yesterday.
Government staff, private sector employees, students and even members of the National Assembly all took part in events promoting healthier lifestyles.
Half of the weekly parliamentary session was set aside for sports, which saw MPs, Shura Council members and National Assembly staff compete against each other in basketball, table tennis, badminton and darts.
“Bahrain Sports Day reflects the government’s drive to improve citizen’s lifestyle,” said Capital Governor Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, as he participated in events organised by the Governorate at Al Najma Club, in Juffair.
The annual occasion was organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) for the second year and targeted Bahrainis and expats of all ages.
It was instigated by His Majesty King Hamad’s Representative for Charity and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
A football tournament for senior citizens, health awareness activities, programmes and workshops were all organised by the Labour and Social Development Ministry at its centres and clubs, along with free medical check-ups.
Thousands of pupils and Education Ministry staff also participated in events at all government schools, including a walk from the ministry’s headquarters, in Isa town, that included stops at various stations featuring activities, medical tests and healthy foods.
Students and staff at the Royal University for Women (RUW) also participated in a 4km walk, basketball, football and handball events, while food trucks served healthy food to participants.
The Health Ministry set up several stations for consultations, light exercise, competitions and information on adopting healthier lifestyles, while staff at the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry took part in a 1.4km walk at Bahrain Financial Harbour (BFH) where they also participated in activities such as press ups, cycling and tug-of-war.
There were also healthy meals provided, medical check-ups and the Minister, Zayed Al Zayani, also crowned the winners of a 2018 football tournament.
Hundreds of employees from the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry accompanied the Minister, Essam Khalaf, at a lecture on self-defence, followed by karate shows and walkathons in different locations.
They also received healthy meals and free medical check-ups.
Batelco employees celebrated the occasion at the company’s headquarters, in Hamala, with football, basketball and other exercises – with prizes up for grabs for the winners.
Health products and services were also available.
Meanwhile, in Muharraq 150 participants took part in a walk along the Pearl Route organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.
