Abu Dhabi: A female bank employee allegedly siphoned off Dh20 million to spend on her lover and his brothers, the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard.
The bank froze the employee's assets and sold all the cars and merchandise she bought with the embezzled money and was able to recover Dh15 million, reported Al Bayan.
The woman's lover - the second defendant in the case - who promised to marry her is seven years younger than her.
His brothers have handed over the money they received from the woman to the authorities.
In June of 2017, the employee abused her position as the head of accounts department by carrying out the illegal transaction using her colleagues pass.
The investigation revealed that the defendant spent millions on her lover and his brothers. The woman paid off their debts, bought luxury cars with special plates, business class plane tickets to European countries, exorbitant gifts and branded watches.
During the court hearing, the defence lawyers and the defendants submitted their statements that no report had been received regarding the employee's indictment, nor was there any bank statement indicating the total amount embezzled from the bank and its recovery.
The hearing of the case has been postponed to a further date.
