A smoking gun..?

Think about that – their solution is to make you, all of you, less free. If they seize power...our American freedoms could be lost and our country will be changed forever.”

Wow! If I were to read, or hear this statement without realising where and when it was said and who said it, I would think we were at war with an evil terrorist group.

But no, it is only one American, talking about another American! Or to be more precise, it is the head of the National Rifle Association Wayne LaPierre talking about gun control advocates!

I have been trying to stay clear of political columns as much as possible. I have tried not to suggest how much a President of the most powerful county irks me and at times even disgusts me.

Every day there is a tweet or two that I desperately try not to get emotive about, or avoid a newspaper article quoting some nuisance that he has uttered or worse still switch on the TV to see and hear him talk about an issue he has absolutely no idea about!

Although he seems to think he does.

See what I mean! I divert. Although this is not entirely a political column, it isn’t not one either!

After the mass shooting in Las Vegas last year, when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a concert leaving 58 people dead and 851 injured, calls for gun control took over the country.

The incident is the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the US.

Two weeks ago, the death of 17 youngsters and their teachers at the Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, raised the question of gun control once again.

Unfortunately I don’t believe there will be anything done in regards to the gun control policy. Why? Because of the second amendment!

First, I would like to say that I am somewhat aghast at some of the words that have been uttered and the sentiments that have been portrayed to the people by this leader and individuals like Mr LaPierre.

Words like ‘the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.’ Or ‘what many people don’t understand...is that the folks who work so hard at the NRA are Great American Patriots. They love our country and will do the right thing. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’ do no justice to anyone and serve no purpose, other than divide people instead of bringing them together.

Secondly it amazes me, how the issue of ‘the second amendment’ is almost the Holy Grail when it comes to policies, talks, debates and heaven forbid – change.

America has been responsible for regime changes in many parts of the world and yet still stuck on the second amendment.

The US Constitution itself has been amended 27 times in the last 200 years and yet when it comes to ‘right to bear arms’ it is untouchable!

The text of the amendment reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

However, in this day and age are there many in the US connected to a militia (an organisation that operates like an army, but whose members are not professional soldiers)?

So when one argues that the right to bear arms is protected by the Constitution, then that is not essentially true.
