Malkiya wasted a 3-1 lead and went down to Al Quwa Al Jawiya of Iraq 4-3 in Group ‘A’ match of the AFC Cup competition played last night at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.
This was Malkiya’s second defeat in a row, after losing to Al Jazeera 1-0 in Amman. They remained with three points from three matches, while the Iraqi team continued sharing the lead in the group with seven points.
In the same group, Al Jazeera joined Al Quwa Al Jawiya on top with seven points by defeating Al Suwaiq of Oman 3-2 in a match played in Muscat.
Malkiya dominated the first half scoring two quick goals in the eighth and ninth minutes through Isa Al Barri and Syrian striker Isra Amer, respectively.
They continued their excellent performance, and hit their third goal in the 14th minute through Isra Amer, his second in the match.
The Iraqis reduced the margin to 3-1 when their striker Zaher Al Madani scored in the 28th minute, as the first half ended 3-1 for Malkiya.
The second half saw Al Quwa Al Jawiya come back strongly as they dominated the game and succeeded in scoring three goals.
They reduced the margin to 3-2 in the 70th minute through Amjad Radhi. The Iraqi team equalised in the 79th minute through Hammadi Ahmed.
The Iraqis shocked the home team with an injury time goal scored by Amjad Radhi to wrap up the thrilling victory.
Al Suwaiq took the lead 2-0 before the Jordanians hit back by scoring three goals on way to victory.
