AN American romantic comedy film, The Big Sick, comes to the screen at Bahrain Cinema Club tonight at 7pm.
Loosely based on the real-life romance of writers Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani, the story follows the couple who must deal with cultural differences after Emily (Zoe Kazan) falls ill.
Pakistani-born aspiring comedian Nanjiani plays himself in the film.
He connects with grad student Emily after one of his stand-up sets.
However, a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, complicating the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents.
When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry, who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
Directed by Michael Showalter, the 2017 film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
It won the Audience Award at Locarno International Film Festival. Call 39682323 for further information.
