Kuwaiti customs authorities have introduced a new hi-tech scanner to thwart attempts to smuggle drugs and explosives by air mail, Al Anba newspaper reported.

The IONSCAN 500DT has already proved its efficiency by detecting a drugs consignment which was sent by air mail from an Asian country.

The Smiths Detection's IONSCAN 500DT, which is considered the first Dual Explosives Trace Detector, was inaguarated less than a week ago at the Hiteen Postal Centre.

The next-generation explosives and narcotics trace detector can be deployed at airports, ports and border crossings, critical infrastructures and corrections facilities.
