Mini Olympics’ inauguration set

THE opening ceremony of the 2018 School Mini Olympics, being organised by Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Education Ministry, is set for today at Isa Sports City in Riffa, starting 11am.

Fifty eight government and private schools will be taking part in this year’s event which concludes on March 22.

More than 3,500 students are set to compete in 20 events - football, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, athletics, cricket, hockey, swimming, water sports, cycling, fencing, tennis, badminton, gymnastics, judo, karate, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and karting.

To be held under the patronage of His Majesty’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the opening ceremonywill see a group of athletes and officials lighting up the Olympic torch at the Bahrain Volleyball Association premises.

The final rehearsal for the opening ceremony was held yesterday with BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar in attendance.

Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of Bahrain Volleyball Association, said the Mini Olympics reflects the great support offered by BOC in an attempt to discover promising talents in different sports.

On his part, Parliament Council member Jalal Kadim said this programme was a national project to promote sports in Bahrain.

Another Parliament Member Adel Al Asoomi echoed similar sentiments.
