Riyadh: Mervat Bukhari has become the first Saudi woman to work at a petrol station in the city of Al-Khobar in the eastern province.

A picture of Mervat as she holds a refueling hose at a petrol station went viral online.

Mervat was recruited to work to supervise other employees who refuel cars.

She has an administrative office in Dammam and supervises the station which became the first digital dispenser in Saudi Arabia – enabling cashless payment.

She broke taboos and joined the petrol station despite the social stigma which considered such jobs as unfit for women.
