FIVE workers were rescued from a burning building in West Eker yesterday.

The Indian nationals were in the labour accommodation which was part of the property owned by Mohamed Mahmood Alkooheji Trading and used to store car spare parts and tyres.

One fireman suffered a minor injury when the flames rose unexpectedly hurting his eyes.

Fifty firemen and two Civil Defence officers spent six hours containing the blaze that erupted at around 11.30am.

Ten fire engines were deployed in the operations.

“The storage facility stored tyres and car spare parts improperly,” Civil Defence Captain Mohammed Al Muhaiza told the GDN at the scene.

He said the building only had one access point which hindered efforts to battle the fire.

“We had to open two additional access points in order to contain the fire especially because the store was divided and there were a lot of items.”

Capt Al Muhaiza also said the building was dilapidated and the heat from the flames caused deep cracks in the wall.

“As we were trying to put out the fire, parts of the ceiling started to collapse around us,” he said.

“It is too early to determine the cause of the fire or to asses the damage, but an investigation will be launched.”

A witness working in an adjacent shop said they rushed outside when they noticed the black smoke.

“The store that caught fire was actually closed,” she said.

“One of our employees pulled up the shutter but the fire had already engulfed the tyres inside.”
