NEARLY 1,000 traders and workers gathered to support the Tojjar bloc which is fielding 15 candidates for tomorrow’s Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) board elections.

The campaign meeting was held in Suq Waqif last night, which was also attended by senior members of the business community and the bloc.

Seventy-two candidates, including 12 women, are contesting the polls which will be held from 8am to 10pm at the Isa Cultural Centre in Juffair, in which 18 seats are up for grabs.

A total of 32,745 businessmen and women have registered to cast their ballot as 26 polling booths have been set up at the venue.

The Tojjar bloc is headed by Sameer Nass and comprises Waleed Kanoo, Dr Abdulmajeed Al Awadhi, Mohammed Kooheji, Aaref Hejres, Uzair Usman, Sonya Janahi, Batool Dadabhai, Abdulhamid Al Asfoor, Dr Waheeb Al Khaja, Jameel Al Ghanah, Khalid Najibi, Fareed Ghloom Bader, Basim Mohammed Al Saie and Dr Mohammed Juman.

“The bloc aims to find progress in all areas of business,” said Mr Nass.

“The fact that the members of the bloc come from various backgrounds such as real estate, industrial, engineering, construction, investment and services, is a significant advantage,” he said.

Mr Al Asfoor, meanwhile, said if the majority of the bloc are elected then a 100 Day Plan will be launched to detail solutions to support the local business community.

“The current administration has missed out on reaching out to the local business community, there has been a big gap,” he said.

“There has not been support or a partnership between them and the local business communities, and because of that gap a lot of things were missed out.”
