A GANG burst into an apartment and assaulted two tenants before robbing them in their own home, a court heard.

Around 10 men showed up at a flat in Manama shared by two Indian tenants, attacked them with pieces of wood and made off with BD500.

It happened in August as the two men who lived in the apartment were preparing to go to bed.

“I was in my apartment in Manama with my roommate and we were both preparing to sleep,” one of the tenants said in his statement to prosecutors.

“I heard a knock on the door and my roommate answered.

“I heard them asking my friend for money and I was surprised when they began hitting him, some with wooden logs.

“I tried to stop the fight, but they started hitting me.”

The other victim, a 36, said their assailants demanded money because they wanted to buy alcohol.

“I heard a knock on the door and I went to open it,” he said.

“They asked me for money to buy alcohol, but I told them I did not have any.

“The group of around 10 people then started hitting me.

“Later, after inspecting the clothes in my closet, I discovered BD500 had been stolen.”

It happened on August 24 last year and two of the alleged attackers, aged 33 and 25, are now on trial in the High Criminal Court, where they are charged with assault and theft.

However, neither are in police custody and both are being tried in absentia.

The identities of the other assailants are not known.

Judges yesterday adjourned the trial until March 28 for a verdict.
