The United Arab Emirates said on Sunday that Qatari fighter planes had intercepted a civilian aircraft carrying 86 passengers aboard a flight bound for Bahrain, UAE state news agency WAM reported.
The agency added that the Emirati civilian craft had to take evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision.
The Emirates aircraft EK 837 was flying from Dubai to Bahrain on Sunday.
The aircraft was carrying 86 passengers while crossing Bahrain air space and was following a scheduled flight path. The aircraft had adhered to necessary approvals and international permits.
In a statement the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said that the Qatari fighter jets followed and approached the Emirates aircraft, reducing the horizontal distance to less than two miles and vertical separation to 700 feet, leaving just a few seconds before a possible collision, thus jeopardising the safety of travellers onboard.
The GCAA has further stated that threatening the safety and well-being of civilian travellers in any way is a completely unacceptable act, and it will file a case with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, against this aggression.
