MANAMA: His Majesty King Hamad opened Bahrain’s biggest housing town yesterday.
Present were His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier.
The Northern Town will be named Salman Town in tribute to the Crown Prince for his outstanding contribution to the nation’s progress, His Majesty said.
The Northern Town, which is being is being built on reclaimed land off the north coast, will rank among the cities of the future, he said.
The King voiced pride at Bahrain’s successive achievements and thanked all those who provided support in meeting aspirations of the kingdom’s loyal people.
His Majesty was saluted by school students on his arrival at the site of the ceremony. He was also welcomed by Housing Minister Bassem Al Hamer and Northern Governor Ali Al Asfoor.
He also handed over the first two units to eligible recipients.
The Housing Minister thanked His Majesty for patronising the inauguration ceremony and cited the royal order to build 40,000 units.
He underlined various stages in construction of the model town, ever since the Crown Prince laid the foundation stone. Work on more than 3,000 units has already been completed, he pointed out.
The town will house 90,000 people.
