MANAMA: His Majesty King Hamad yesterday opened the Northern Town, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier.
He announced that the promising milestone would be named “Salman Town”, in tribute to the Crown Prince for his outstanding contribution to the nation’s progress.
The King was saluted by school students on his arrival at the site of the ceremony. He was also welcomed by Housing Minister Bassem Al Hamer and Northern Governor Ali Al Asfoor.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony,he expressed delighting at opening the landmark town.
“By good fortune, the opening of this modern milestone comes as part of a massive urban and civilisational stride that meets the needs of all region and consolidates the standing of each governorate to play its role in supporting the national economy for Bahrain to be a model of modernism and development,” the King said.
He paid tribute to the loyal people of Bahrain for their contribution to the nation’s development.
His Majesty said the new town will rank among the cities of the future.
At the end of the ceremony the King handed over the first two units to eligible recipients.
The Housing Minister paid tribute to the King.
He cited the royal order to construct 40,000 units and underlined stages in construction of the model town, ever since the Crown Prince laid the foundation stone, including reclamations, engineering blueprints in co-operation with the French Urban Authority.
He revealed that work on more than 3,000 units has already been completed, pointing out that the town would have eventually the capacity to accommodate more than 90,000 people. The town features all amenities, including health, educational, religious and sport and transportation facilities and services, in addition to a modern roads network and well-developed infrastructure.
The Northern Governor described the opening of the town as an historic event.
He commended the role of Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa in strengthening security and safety, which go hand in hand with development.
A documentary film showcasing the construction of the multi-phased town was shown, highlighting co-operation between all parties and its amenities and facilities – including beaches, mosques, schools, universities, and nurseries, in addition to hospital, health centres and clinics and sport city which includes a football stadium.
The ceremony featured a poem by Mohammed Hadi Al Halwachi, and a traditional ardha show and an operetta prepared by the ministries of Housing and Education.
